SMSC and British Values

Our Lady and St Anselm’s R.C. Primary is committed to serving its local, national and international community. We recognise the  multi-cultural, multi faith and ever-changing landscape of the United Kingdom.  At OLSA, we know that the personal development of pupils spiritually, morally, socially and culturally is central to their ability to learn and achieve. As a Catholic school, we actively promote values, virtues and ethics that shape our pupils' character and moral perspective, through the teachings of the Church.  We encourage children and staff to witness these values in their everyday lives. To provide pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive, caring attitude, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of other cultures. (SMSC)  The teachers’ standards expect teachers to uphold public trust in the profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.  This includes not undermining fundamental British values. We are confident that our continued focus on the Gospel values will give our pupils the necessary awareness of what it means to be a good citizen in Britain today and embed in them the building blocks of a future successful and productive life. We teach about democracy, civic responsibility, rules and laws, the monarchy, equality, values and virtues, environmental awareness and understanding of other faiths. The school uses opportunities to promote these values across the curriculum, PSHE and the rich ethos of our school. The school seeks to serve all so that all feel a sense of belonging and welcome.
