Reading
Reading remains a key priority, especially within Year 6 where we aim to increase children's stamina to read to prepare them for transition to high school. It is vital that your child reads for at least 20 minutes per day and records their achievements in their reading record.
We expect to see children completing quizzes upon Accelerated reader every fortnight as a minimum. Class teachers will carefully monitor this and will regularly update parents with their child's progress towards this target.
Your child does not have to always read to you. They can read to themselves or others. However, it is important to listen to your child regularly and support their reading and comprehension at home. Alongside the Accelerated Reader scheme, we also have a wider range of texts that children are free to sample as part of our Reading for Pleasure. Children are also allowed to read books from home and complete reading quizzes on these too.
On return to school, your child will automatically be issued with a reading book. This is to ensure that they start reading immediately upon return. Over the coming weeks, your child will complete a further Accelerated Reader baseline test to assess their current reading level and a further book will be issued at their correct reading level. If you have any questions on this process, please do not hesitate to contact me.
