MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES: SPANISH

The learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils.  At OLSA, we believe in the benefit of giving pupils the opportunity to learn another language.  In order to aid the transition into many of the local high schools, who predominantly teach Spanish as their core language, we teach Spanish to every class within KS2. As a Catholic school, where every child is valued as part of our school family, we recognise the significance of learning another language.  We aim to raise awareness of the multilingual and multicultural world, and introduce an international dimension to learning, giving pupils an insight into their own culture, and those of others.

The learning of a foreign language provide opportunities to reinforce the knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.  Through learning another language, pupils are able to develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning.  They develop linguistic competence, extend their knowledge of how language works and explore similarities and differences between Spanish and English.

We help children develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries and we strive for them to apply their learning in a variety of contexts, especially through reinforcing and expanding their knowledge and understanding of their own language, including aspects of grammar.

______________

Mrs Howarth is our subject leader for Spanish.  She is passionate in broadening the experiences of our children through their developing competence within Spanish lessons. We believe it is vital to develop our children's cultural awareness and their general foreign language learning skills.

We are very fortunate to have Mrs Duffy teaching our Spanish lessons, as she is originally from Ecuador. She joins us weekly to work with KS2.
